Why talk about Summer Cooling in winter?

Why are we talking about summer cooling in the middle of winter?

Because you need to know about the new Airius ‘Sapphire Plus’ EC fan. It will ‘blow you away’.

As I sit here on a cold winter’s day, with the heater on and wearing a jumper, I find it incongruous, as you no doubt do as well, to be talking about the exciting new Airius ‘Sapphire Plus’.

I mean fans are generally for cooling, aren’t they? Not very appropriate in winter.

As regular readers will know, we aim to make our newsletters here in Airius Oceania, informative and often science based, adding to your knowledge base and offering insights into energy and cost savings as well as thermal comfort using controllable and directional air movement.

Certainly, the use of destratification in winter is the usual discussion point for Airius newsletters during the winter period but with such an important development in the progression of Airius products, and with summer not that far way away now, we wanted to shout out to the world about this exciting new cooling product designed and manufactured by Airius.

The Sapphire Plus

Primarily designed as an extremely cost-effective cooling solution (while still offering destratification if needed) the new Airius G400 SP or ‘Sapphire Plus’, has just been released and will, literally, ‘blow your socks off’. (pun intended)

As Airius is making huge inroads into the cooling market across Oceania, India, the Middle East and Asia, our customers have experienced great success with the use of our standard, suitably sized, Airius Air Pear units to provide significant air flow on the floor and above the floor, or even across the space, for cooling.

Sports and basketball halls, gymnasiums (Virgin Active in Barangaroo, NSW springs to mind), warehouses (such as DHL and Halliburton) indoor pools, car showrooms (Toyota, BMW, Skoda and Honda) and outdoor areas are just some of the recent projects we have provided strong air movement for summer cooling here in Australia.

Let’s take basketball halls for example.

As a cooling solution and a great example, Airius has recently been installing their Model 60 EC Air Pears, 6-8 units per basketball court and surrounding area, and have been achieving 1.3 m/s second air flow at 300 mm above ground level and great satisfaction for our clients. This has been achieved in warm climates in Brisbane and surrounds, Perth and in inner and western Sydney.

This option is very cost effective when compared to large HVLS fans.

We undertook independent CFD analysis of the air flow capability and distribution effectiveness of six (6) of the model 60 EC Air Pears in a basketball hall, with the discharge nozzle mounted at 9.5 metres high.

Overall coverage of the 800 sq. mts. floor was excellent, with cooling air velocities of around 0.4 m/s found even at the extremes of the space. This is still a noticeable and effective level of air movement for cooling.  However, in the main court area, significant cooling air velocities of 1-1.3 m/s were achieved. That’s with a delivery volume of 850 l/s.

These sorts of air movement levels are shown in numerous research articles as offering excellent cooling in even the warmest of climates and temperatures.

The thing to remember is when the air hits the floor from an Airius unit there is enough thrust behind it, so it spreads out across and round the space, ensuring cooling air movement everywhere. Yes, there is a more air flow directly under the fan, as there is with any fan.

But Airius units have enough power and air flow on, and, just above (600mm) floor level, to create excellent distribution of that air delivery and the related cooling effects, and we have numerous testimonials and case studies here in Australia to validate that.

However, discussions with our customers and our own observations here in Australia and across the hot south and desert areas of the USA, India and Asia, have indicated a benefit in using less units with a wider spread of air and even, believe it or not, more velocity and air flow volume.

Obviously, having less units reduces the installation costs but has other benefits including up front costs and design flexibility.

Enter the new G400EC SP. The new ‘Sapphire Plus’.

Developed from the very powerful Airius Air Pear Model 100 EC, but with a much shorter and cylindrical body and a re-engineered air delivery mechanism enabling a wider air flow distribution than the standard Air Pears, the new GS400EC SP will provide centreline air velocities of 3.2 + m/s at 10 metres and will discharge 1,600l/s of air. That’s a massive amount of air speed and volume if you want it.

At only 300 mm long, and 450mm in diameter, and weighing just 15 kgs, the compact dimensions of this new unit makes them even more obscure than a typical Airius unit and, (if we use basketball courts as the benchmark, or as an example everyone understands), this means that a small number of units can be utilised, per court, to offer huge amounts of air flow. With the full speed control capability of the world’s leading EBM Papst EC 400mm (German) fan motor, these fans will only need to run at 40-70% speed to literally wash air over your court at volumes and velocities unmatched by any other product.

Perfect for cooling.

Now to the important part.

Costs.

We recently visited a cooling installation we did in WA over three years ago where we had installed two, just two, model 100 EC standard Air Pears in a basketball court at 9.5 metres high (discharge point) at the Armadale Council WA; Sports Arena.

In that application they used 4 x Model 100EC Airius Fans in an 1,100 sq. metre space. That’s two units per court! And air movement was felt all over the room, even at the edges.

And it gets to 45 Deg C in summer there!

The client loved the units so much they bought another three one year later to install into another basketball facility.

So, two Airius 100 EC units per court is an option.

However, with the significantly lower cost of the new Airius G400 EC ‘Sapphire Plus’, using the same powerful motor as the Airius model used above, but in a different case, Airius can offer massive air movement per basketball court (as an example) from $6,500.00+, installed. (subject to a site inspection, floor to ceiling height or review of plans)

That’s an unmatched offer by any other fan type.

These units will offer significant cooling air movement right across the court and surrounds or across your warehouse, indoor pool or manufacturing plant etc. or wherever you need lots of air flow for cooling.

These new units are: –

  • Building Management System (BMS) or infinite (0-100%) speed control capability
  • Low energy use -380 watts each single phase at full speed
  • Rock solid non-pro rata warranty – 5 years + 5 years

  1. Lighting redesign to eliminate strobing
  2. Structural changes for support
  3. 3 Phase power
  4. Ongoing maintenance contracts
  5. Cages

If you take in the consequential costs in items 1-4 above and the initial supply and install costs, these new Airius G400 SP fans will leave all other fans in their dust. (sorry)
